The Athanasian Creed

The Athanasian Creed is a statement of belief, focusing on Trinitarian doctrine. It is credited to Athanasius of Alexandria, a famous defender of Nicene Theology. However it was most likely not written by Athanasius for several reasons. Athanasius wrote all of his many known writings in Greek and it would appear that the Athanasian Creed was written in Latin.
It would be more easily attributed to Tertullian since Tertullian was considered the father of the Trinitarian doctrine and that Tertullian’s writings were in Latin.
There is no record of either men taking credit for this writing. It could have been written by anyone wanting to promote the doctrine of the trinity.
In any case this doctrine would definitely not have been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 2:20). It was the false teachers and damnable heresies that Peter warned about (2 Peter 2:1).
