"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." - (1 Corinthians 13:1-13) Authorized King James Version of 1611

My friends my heart is heavy this morning and I am greatly grieved in my spirit. I see so much arguing in the church over doctrines of small issues. There is such diverse traditions among people, that have often become law for some. Many of these laws or rules are imposed upon others in a legalistic fashion often resulting in driving people away from God rather than draw them to God.

Men stand firm on many issues. Some will preach and teach a rigid appearance and dress code, others attack other things such as kept holidays. Much of these things that are believed and taught in various assemblies are in error, but they all are condemnation and lack charity and grace toward fellow brethren.

"Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." - (Romans 14:1-13) Authorized King James Version of 1611

If we in our personal walk believe that a woman cannot cut her hair regardless of teaching to the contrary, then do this for yourself unto the Lord and do not condemn your brother over it. If you believe that you should have a beard and that there is nothing wrong with it, then do not condemn you brother that remains clean shaven by his own tradition. If you believe that it is a sin to observe a holiday such as Christmas, then do not keep it. Do not condemn not your brother who may keep the holiday for traditions sake or other reasons not known to you.

It is good for us to come together to share in these things and say why we believe what we believe and discuss them without condemnation of the one that keeps or the one that does not keep it.

It is my hope that the things that I write here are received as things that I believe or that God has revealed to me. I share them as a teacher and an elder in the Church of God and not as a condemnation of those that do not keep them.

Nothing that I write here is intended as an attack on any person, assembly or organization. I too am imperfect and will stand before God as all will and give an account.

God has shown me much error in the Church and I feel led to expose that error. Admittedly I am often reluctant to do as I know it will cause brethren to rise up against me. I say these things because I know they are true and am led by the Holy Spirit to say them. I do not say them to attack anyone or any group but I desire to fellowship with all brethren in peace.

I may believe that there is nothing wrong with a man having a beard, but if you believe we should be clean shaven I have no condemnation of you. I may believe there is nothing wrong with keeping a family holiday on the day that the world calls Christmas. But if you believe that has pagan roots and is sin to do so then I accept that for you and have no condemnation of you.

In short, I have no personal interest in keeping the Christmas holiday for my sake, but it is for the sake of my unsaved family members who do. Should I alienate my family driving them further away with such a condemnation toward whom God has not yet saved?

I have seen the much harm that legalism has done in homes. We all as the head of our households need to draw our own line for our families. I as the family patriarch of my family have saved and unsaved alike that still come together as family. On some matters I stand firm regarding many issues in my home. On other things that are small, I give grace that comes from charity.

Also, I believe it to be a reflection of another weakness when men feel the need to badger others with their traditions and beliefs. If one is confident in what they believe, they shouldn't feel the need to beat others down (usually verbally) for not believing the same. Your belief should not be dependent on others' beliefs.

In addition, certain traditions and beliefs should not be the first thing a non-believer is told upon visiting church. Salvation should be the first goal. All of the other stuff can come later. And honestly, if the other stuff is of God, a newly converted person will begin to be lead in that direction by the hand (and Spirit) of God.

Paul does a brilliant job of dealing with this subject. Though most pentecostals do not use this as an example. Please allow me to do so. By using Romans chapter three and looking closely at the usage of the word "law" we can see that the context of its usage is obviously not only one of an inward law but an outward external law. IE "Thou shalt not covet" - Internal Law. "A man that weareth that which pertaineth to a woman is an abomination." - External Law.

So the point is simply replace the word law with "Holiness Standard". Read it out loud. It will give you the clearest definition of true Grace found in the book of Romans.

Rom 3:19 But we know that whatever things the Law(Holiness Standards) says, it says to those who are under the Law(Holiness Standards); so that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may be under judgment before God,
Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law(Holiness Standards) none of all flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law(Holiness Standards) is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:21 But now a righteousness of God has been revealed apart from Law(Holiness Standards), being witnessed by the Law(Holiness Standards) and the Prophets;
Rom 3:22 even the righteousness of God through the faith of Jesus Christ, toward all and upon all those who believe. For there is no difference,
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;
Rom 3:25 whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness through the passing by of the sins that had taken place before, in the forbearance of God;
Rom 3:26 for the display of His righteousness at this time, for Him to be just and, forgiving the one being of the faith of Jesus.
Rom 3:27 Then where is the boasting? It is excluded. Through what law(Holiness Standards)? Of works? No, but through the law of faith.
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the Law(Holiness Standards).
Rom 3:29 Or is He the God of the Jews only, and not also of the nations? Yes, of the nations also,
Rom 3:30 since it is one God who will justify circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Rom 3:31 Do we then make the Law(Holiness Standards) void through faith? Let it not be! But we establish the Law(Holiness Standards).

Faith taught in Love will allow the true spirit of Grace to bring a spirit of Holiness about us. If the root of the Standard is Grace and it has biblical precendence in scripture then it is right. However just the opposite applies. If the standard is taught as a means of attaining salvation then the standards become sin. Does that mean we have no standards because of Grace. God forbid. Brethren we must endeavor to preach and teach living for God and salvation by Grace through Faith alone. Not of works lest any man should boast. Standards are not a means of salvation, they are a fruit of salvation.

I very much agree with you. The Bible does tell us to seek out our own salvation with fear and trembling. It did not tell us to seek out salvation through what others tell us.
Standards were flags that told what country or region you came from. It was not the mood of dress of the army. Now each army does have a dress code but even within the army different groups of different dress codes that apply to their job and rank. But Holiness unto the Lord is not measured in what we wear. What we wear comes about from our holiness unto God. If you are living a holiness life you will be modest, you will not be a drunkard, you will be kind, you will show love to your fellow man, you will not be lazy, etc...
What I determine to be holiness for me and my family others may not understand or believe. I do not hold them to my holiness and I do not expect to be held to theirs. I will not put a stumbling block in your path nor will I knowingly offend you but please do the same for me.
The plan of salvation is what needs to be the common thread and all else simple differences such as you find in every family.

Truly, Legalism is a horrible thing evident in some churches. What exactly is legalism? There are different aspects to, or different manifestations of legalism. Perhaps the most notable is confusing personal convictions with Biblical mandates. In other words,"private vs. public." When one becomes confused and is not able to distinguish the difference between Biblical commands and personal persuasions, he or she may enforce extra-moral standards on other believers. This in fact, turns personal convictions into a public mandate, requiring all believers within his or her influence to abide by his or her extra-moral standards. Understand, legalism is a universal tendency of mankind. We want to do everything on our own. Humans like being in control. However, often times conservatism is confused with legalism. This is unfortunate. I think there is a difference between a morally conservative individual and a legalistic individual. The difference is not in their actions per se, but in how they think about their actions. The legalist thinks his right moral behavior grants him favor before God that he otherwise would not have had, or he thinks his right behavior can keep him saved. A morally conservative person understands that no amount of good works can earn one favor with God, but also understands that we are to do good works because we have been saved. Read Ephesians 2:9,10. For this person, good works are an act of love toward a gracious God. Because we have been saved by Him, not personal achievements that we must meet in order to be saved. Conservatism is not legalism. There is no question to a true Apostolic that we must be holy, and that holiness applies to every aspect of our lives. It seems to me that too many fail to apply Biblical holiness principles to their lives consistently. They do not apply them when it comes to where they go, what they say, what they watch, what they listen to, what they do, how they look, etc. When they encounter others who are concerned about those areas and are applying Biblical principles to the same, it is easy for them to label these people as legalist and have sort of a disdain for them as though they are too radical. Perhaps it could be said that the majority of us are simply too laxed when it comes to being holy. Those we often look at as legalists are simply being consistent in their holiness. A perspective view could be that when you are on the far left, those on the right look like they are far far away, even when they are only moderately to the right. Something to consider isn't it? God Bless.

As a homeless backslider Jesus reminded me I was a Jonah, trying to hide from His Great Love for me. I only found repentance because Jesus used several charities to melt my hardened heart again. I am only the clay I pray, He will revive the USA and let the Multitudes run to an altar seeking Truth!!!!

bondservant; I understand your convictions, and admire your strenth in standing up for and in truth; I must say though that Romans 14 isn't saying that we should just let everthing go Romans 13:vs14 What he is talking about is the mosaic law begining chapter 10, and jews who were still reliant on it; And not to condem them for it; Let them be saved First, and let God take those things away. Christ mass is not ok; Rev 2:14. Don't condem, but do not partake.

PS. It doesn't matter what I believe; What matters is what does Gods word say?

Well, here's my two cents :D I go to a Pentecostal Holiness Church. Sadly, a few of the members veiw our standards as "rules of the church". I struggled with this for years. I went back and forth between the standards...following them, not following them. I finally took the matter to the Lord and let HIM lead me in them. He led me to follow these standards. But, let me say this...I have dear friends in the Lord that do not follow these standards, and I respect them just as any other brother or sister in the Lord. I do NOT beleive in condemning someone because they do not beleive the way I do. The answer GOD gave me on this was..."does the hand say to the foot, because I am not the foot I am not part of the body?". God Forbid! Jokingly most of the time, but serious still...I say...maybe us Holiness folks are the shoulders, and the Baptists are the hands, and the Methodists are the feet, but praise God we are all part of the body! Just like our physical bodies, all of our parts LOOK, and WORK differently...but, they are all needed for the body as a whole to function PROPERLY. Legalism is ungodly. Where the spirit of the lord is there is LIBERTY! However, let me say this in DEFENSE of Holiness believers, that just as you dont want us to judge and condemn you, please understand that we also do not like to be looked down upon because we hold these beleifs. I dont care if someone feels like they have to stand on their head and gargle goldfish to please God, let them be. If we ALL would stop judging, we would be so much better off. If you have any questions, email me.... lilrobin21@yahoo.com!~ God Bless!

I NOTICED THAT I NEED TO INCLUDE WORKS IN MY SALVATION. WHAT WORKS SHOULD I DO? WHY DID THE THIEF ON THE CROSS GET AWAY WITHOUT WORKS? THATS NOT FAIR. I GUESS SOME PEOPLE DO DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF WORKS. WHAT IS THE BARE MINIMUM I CAN DO? THIS SALVATION STUFF IS TOO HARD. I AM SO CONFUSED. WHAT IF I SIN WHILE I AM SUPPOSED TO BE DOING WORKS? DO THEY CANCEL OUT EACH OTHER? IS THERE A PROPORTION OF SIN TO WORKS THAT MAKES ME ACCEPTABLE? I FIND MYSELF SINNING EVERYDAY. I AM DOOMED. JESUS SAYS IN THE BIBLE OF PEOPLE WHO DID DID GOOD THINGS IN HIS NAME THAT HE NEVER KNEW THEM. HOW CAN I BE SAVED?

Posted by SCOTTKISS at Sunday, October 26, 2008 23:50:27

Let my try to help Scott. The thief on the cross didn’t "get away" with anything per say. He did what was needed to be saved at that time. The New Testament did not start until Jesus came back and filled his believers with the Holy Ghost on the Day of Pentecost. That is why there was no need for him to be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost. The thief repented, admitted he was wrong, and then believed that Jesus was God in the flesh, the messiah. God then accepted him and told him he would be with Him in paradise.

Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was resurrected. You must do the same.

1.) You need to repent of your sins, don’t worry about what might happen tomorrow, let tomorrow take care of itself. Repent for what you know you have done wrong and stop doing those sins. This symbolizes Jesus' death.

2.) You need to be baptized in Jesus Name for the remission of your sins (acts 2:38). Then you are buried with Jesus in the waters of baptism.

3.) After you do these steps God WILL fill you with the Holy Ghost. This is being resurrected with Jesus in new life (hence the term 'new birth').

The rest will fall into place once you have experianced this new birth, but not before. After you have done all this and you have Jesus inside you living through you, He will lead you in what you must do. Salvation is not a work if you are in love with Jesus. You will do what pleases Him out of hand. Salvation is very simple. Please contact me if you have more questions and I will help the best I can or point you in the right direction. I will pray for you friend.

God Bless!!!
